Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m 20 years old and study Apparel and Textile design at
Michigan State University.
Name your biggest achievement so far?
This last year has been pretty crazy it all started when I
was accepted into the BFA program where we focus more on avant garde fashion. I was then chosen out of 15 students to create
a concept fashion design and photo shoot. For the schools fashion show I
entered three garments and out of over 200 designs all three of my garments
where chosen to walk in the fashion show and one of my garments even got “Best
of Show”. That was definitely by biggest achievement and I got a lot of friend
requests on Facebook the next day! Then after the fashion show I got the
opportunity to collaborate with another designer and design moving art for the
Transparency fashion show at the Michigan State Broad Art Museum.
What made you want to go into Fashion Design?
I was always interested in fashion and art and I love the
feeling of working so hard on something and seeing the finished product. But embarrassingly enough it all started when
I saw this purse made out of Capri sun pouches, which influenced me to take
sewing lessons.
What was your biggest challenge so far?
Time management has always been a struggle for me. My major
is so time-consuming it was really hard to balance work, school, and my social
life. Luckily I can always finish on time but I always find it to be
challenging.
Why did you want to intern for Crystal B. Designs?
I knew I wanted to find an internship locally, so I started
researching local Chicago designers. And I found an opportunity to volunteer
for her A/W 2013 Walk the Line fashion
show. I also share Crystal’s love of architecture which drew me to the brand and
after volunteering I knew I wanted to be a part of the team. Everyone was so
nice and fun, and Crystal really has a unique eye for fashion. Now that I am
interning Crystal has taught me so much, I know I made the right decision.
What are your favorite things to design?
I am drawn to dresses but love avant garde fashion. With a
dress I have more creative freedom and it allows me to really tailor the dress
to complement a woman’s shape. I also love dressing up so it fits into my
everyday life!
What do you hope to do in the future?
I hope to move to New York. I want to start by working for
another designer at first to get a good understanding of the industry. This
internship at Crystal B. Designs has taught me so much and I’m always looking
to learn more. After that I’m just going to see where opportunities take me, I’m
really open to anything.
What companies would you want to work for.
Hmm that’s a hard one. There are so many great companies out
there I don’t want to limit myself or have my heart set on one company. I believe
you can learn something from everyone, so my philosophy is whatever happens happens.
Do your friends ever ask you for styling advice or want you
to make clothes for them?
Oh my god all the time! Even the little things, like fixing
a hem, or taking something in. I would love to make them all clothes if I had
the time and money. I have even gotten orders already for future weddings for
friends that aren't even engaged! I don’t even know how I feel about bridal.
How would you describe your personal style?
I think I incorporate trendy pieces with classic pieces. I
really like taking something of great quality that’s simple and versatile and
mixing it with a statement piece for some excitement.
What is your favorite thing to wear?
Ooo that’s really tough! I love my army green maxi dress. It
has a really simple front but the back is open, so it business in front and a
party in the back. I am also in love with my Jeffrey Campbell’s. They make me
feel so sassy like I can conquer the world! I have a weakness for sunglasses too;
I think I could wear a different pair every day for two months.
What are some other things you enjoy doing?
I ran track and cross country in high school so I still
enjoy running. Of course I love to shop. I have a cat named Nigel (Yes named
after Nigel Barker from Project Runway). I also love the beach and watching Netflix
with friends. Oh and I’m obsessed with candy crush. I’m at level 107, I just
can’t stop.
Favorite bands?
It depends on my mood but when I’m working Mumford and sons and
recently Lana Del Ray. Crystal and I love to jam out to our girl Rihanna. And Luke
Bryan is always a go to in the summer.
Favorite brands?
Nordstrom’s has a great variety of brands that can grow with
me because they aren't supper trendy. Of course I get some of my trendy pieces from
H&M, Target, and Francesca’s. I have a couple designer piece that I’m
obsessed with a Michael Kors watch, an Alexander Mcqueen clutch, and my Jeffery
Campbell’s.
